Shoe Story: Kéla Walker Keeps It Kute
/The hostest with the mostest - no literally guys and gyals - Ms. Kéla Walker a Telly Award winner {she has five...hair flip ensues} and FOUR time EMMY nominee {flips some more hair}, host, correspondent and producer for major media outlets has a shoe closet that could rival Ms. Rivers. I'm talking PHI, Charlotte Olympia, Sophia Webster, Cesare Paciotti and everything in between. I had the pleasure of meeting her for the first time off Instagram during our shoot last week in Brooklyn. Ms. Walker is spunky, funny and full of life. She's from North Carolina, which many of you may or may not know, but has made NYC her home since high school. And in case you forgot, she runs one of the kutest fashion sites on line right now, Kéla's Kloset. For a good 3 hours, I stood on her furniture, scaled her living room floor and stuck her heels in an old fashion stand-up fan to bring you the latest edition of Shoe Stories. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
Put your ideal outfit together, where do you start and what are you wearing? What is it composed of?
Oh my gosh – like literally one outfit {laughs} For me my outfit depends on my mood and I go from there. Some days it starts from the shoes, like I really want to wear these so whats going to go with it. Some days it’s a blouse and I'm like what can I wear to make this pop. Or let me force the shoes and this blouse together. BUT in my opinion a no brainer stylish on-the-go outfit starts with a dress. You don’t have to mix and match and put pieces together. I love a good sheath dress its loose and flowy - you don’t know my shape but its kinda cute. It hits above my knee and shows off my legs, which are one of my greatest assets and I like to pair it {my dress getup} with a great heel and a bag.
Name your top fav shoe designers?
I think it changes a lot. I have a collection of Louboutin's which I love, but I feel like Louboutin's, I hate to say it, but for lack of a better word have become overrated. Everyone is so focused on the red bottom. I love Sophia Webster and what she's doing right now. Her shoes are so fun and quirky with lots of personality. You can put them on with ANYTHING and your style just speaks itself. I really love, in the same category of Sophia Webster, Nicholas Kirkwood {ME: he's my favorite} he's doing some amazing stuff. I can't afford those pieces right now, but I love them. I also love Charlotte Olympia who did a great sale in NYC, I went and it was great. It’s the only way I can get a Charlotte Olympia. While I love a good shoe, I'm not going to spend my entire budget on it. So what we’re gonna do is stalk a sample sale, stand in line and get me a good shoe. {ME: Sophia, Charlotte and Nicholas do a great sale in London we need to go} And lastly, Zara – I love a good Zara shoe. Every time I wear a Zara shoe people are always like "oh my gosh they're so cute. Where did you get those shoes from?" And to their surprise my response is usually, "Girl. Zara." They do some really fun stuff. They’re not hard and they don’t fall a part like some other mass produced designers. I recommend purchasing them on sale and you'll have a good shoe for quite some time. {ME: I have to try Zara. I haven’t given them a chance.} They also have a really good fierce flat and when I’m on the red carpet, all the PR girls are like "omg where did you get those and I’m like Zara." I'm still stylish and cute while they walk around in pain in heels.
Whose shoe closet would you love to raid?
Sarah Jessica Parker - simply amazing collection. The Man Repeller: Leandra Medine – she would have great selections and Anna Dello Russo – her shoes speak for her. She just has great style.
Define your style in three words?
Feminine. Modern. Edgy. {with a full on stretch into edgy}.
If your shoes could talk, what would they say?
Aowwww you see us. We coming. Yup, watch us walk {burst of laughter}.
So you’re a shoe, what’s your style?
I am a comfortable heel with height and some texture and some color and some intricacy and something that can be dressed up or dressed down. I’m anything but dull!
If there were a law passed that prohibited women from wearing heels, what would you do?
I’m moving to where that law is not in effect. Like what life is that, who lives that life? Not me.
Earth has become unlivable, everyone is going to another planet, and you can only bring a carry-on. What’s in it?
An amazing dress, like a boat dress and when the wind hits you its like yasssss {totally cracking up}. A pair of jeans, a simple t-shirt, a pair of heels that can work with anything – a simple pump. My skin regimen will be in there, 4oz of course since we're traveling. A couple pair of fancy flats. A jumpsuit. And my cellphone. And my laptop. And some sequins somewhere, somehow.
Flash Round
Vamp or Red? Red
Diana Vreeland or Iris Apfel? {long pause} Iris Apfel
Fall or Summer? Fall
As we were wrapping up, we both connected and shared a moment as to why we love shoes and what they truly mean. Here is a snippet of the conversation:
Kéla: If I don’t invest in anything else, I’m going to invest in a shoe. I could gain 10lbs or 15lbs and not fit my clothes, but my shoes will ALWAYS fit. I will ALWAYS get my monies worth. They will pull together an outfit. You can get a $10 dress, but if you pair it with the right shoe that dress can look like its 10x the price. Quality is important when it comes to a good collection. Your entire collection cannot consist only of fast fashion.
ME: I used to have a question incorporated into the interview that hinged on garnering this type of response, but I took it out since a lot of the responses became redundant. I started FROM THE BOTTOM UP! for this very reason. Mama has body honety, but I love to dress. What I realized was that I could have all the designer or not in the world...on my FEET! My feet are loyal to me, they don't change and I've always loved shoes, but this made them become a TRUE part of my identity.
