Ms. Barnes in her new Fall 16 collection shearling and suede pumps.

With a degree in Math + Engineering, ANDDDDD an MBA {yes girls}, Ms. Tiannia Barnes was well on her way to becoming a superstar in Corporate America. But one day fate would change all of that and now Ms. Barnes can add Shoe Designer to her roster of capabilities.

Launching her namesake line only 2 years ago, Tiannia says "that shoes chose her, she didn't choose shoes." She began sketching shoe designs, in full color, at random places like restaurants, at home, wherever and whenever she felt inspired. She eventually shared her designs with friends who were fully supportive and encouraged her to take the leap.

After endless research, she landed on a shoe design school in Cleveland, Ohio - nonetheless and begin an intensive class inclusive of pattern making, pattern cutting and assembly, and finally manufacturing.

Her shoe aesthetic is fun, sophisticated, edgy, and distinctive. The fall collection features a fur ridden ankle strap sandal for goodness sake. Her shoes have been seen on platinum recording artists Maddie and Tae, actress Sarah Gadon and more.

Ms. Barnes is a force to be reckoned with. As she maintains and grows her shoe business through her showroom and website Tianniabarnes.com; she still works in Corporate America and juggles both those acts all while being a mom.

After chatting with Tiannia we learned that with a little bit of faith, focus, and the relentless pursuit of passion, you can achieve anything.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the shoe show.

From The Bottom Up!™: Who inspired you to become a shoe designer?

Tiannia Barnes: The things that inspire me are just my travels. I get a lot of inspiration from different colors and cultures. The thing that really pushed me was internal – it was finding my passion and I decided to pursue that and it led me to shoes.

FTBUP: What were you doing prior?

I've worked corporate America as an IT Program Manager. I continue to work in my current career and as I work on my brand full-time until I am able to make a complete transition. Building a brand, being a mother, and working a full-time job requires extreme focus and balance.

FTBUP: What is your design aesthetic?

TB: Classic foundation, with a touch of timelessness and boldness. Each of my shoes have to have some edginess to them and a standout detail to bring them out. If you look at each and every single one there is some bold detail that brings out the shoe to bring out and express what I really want in my line.

FTBUP: Out of your collection, what is your favorite style?

TB: I love them allll. Tough question. My favorite is my flat, in particular the leopard print option. They are so comfortable and can be paired with anything, a red suit, a green suit or jeans and t-shirt and still look fly. I like the unexpected. I love the gold addition at mid-toe vs. cap-toe which is so different. I walk around the city and I see people looking at this shoe – even men, who compliment me on it.

I am also in love with the shearling right now. I wish it was on a runway show right now for fashion week, that would be a great win for me.

FTBUP: Who are your style influencers?

TB: I love fashion all together, but I love Gucci. They’re very timeless. You can buy a Gucci shoe today and still wear it 5-6 years from now. I love Nicholas Kirkwood, he’s pretty awesome and I like Giuseppe Zanotti because he steps outside the box with some of his designs.

FTBUP: How do you see your brand evolving within the next 5 years?

TB: I would love for my brand to be internationally known – Dubai, Paris, London. I travel a lot and that’s where my inspiration comes from so I would really love to see my shoes on my travels.

FTBUP: Why shoes?

TB: Shoes chose me, I didn’t choose shoes. About 4-5 years ago I just started raw sketching; the shoes started coming to me, I would sketch them anywhere on napkins, pieces of paper etc. I’m not an artists by trade, I have degrees in Math and Engineering and an MBA, but the shoes were calling me. I sketched them exactly as you see some of them here, in color and as they were designed. I started showing my friends and they were really into it. I had a vision and put it on paper. So I decided to start researching shoe design schools and looked here in New York and of course it was very expensive. At that time it was more of a hobby, but I love to learn and wanted to take my skills to the next level. But I found a school in Cleveland, Ohio believe it or not and the instructor and I really hit it off. It was pricey, but I saved the money. My instructor gave me a one-on-one experience and I left for an intensive immersive program for 10-12 hours a day where I learned pattern making, pattern cutting and assembly, and manufacturing. I made every shoe from hand. Once everything was done, I said ok this is it. I felt like God was pushing me towards this. And now I am living my passion and walking in my destiny. I believe my purpose is providing inspiration and that is why God is accelerating my progress.

What was your first shoe?

TB: The Jackie – named after my mother; The Pearl – named after my grandmothers; The Regin – named after my sister.

FTBUP: Describe Tiannia Barnes in three words.

TB: Passionate. Adventurous. Intellectual.

FTBUP: What’s your process?

TB: I get up and mediate and let my day flow. It’s all about your spirituality, relinquishing control and letting things flow. I just try to figure out what I am doing. But I let it flow.

FTBUP: Who is the Tiannia Barnes woman?

TB: She is a very fabulous woman. She is a go-getter who is very confident. Her shoes add on to her style. She can be a stay at home mom or a CEO. A light follows her. She is stylish and fab!

Designer Spotlight: Becki Coakley

We sat down with Becki of Becki Coakley to chop it up about shoes and style. We were not only enthused with her passion, but we were also inspired. Becki hails from Charleston, SC where her mother was her biggest fashion influence. She launched her collection in May of 2015 after two years of planning and ideation. Becki has always been drawn to shoes and knew since she was in middle school that fashion was her calling; her vision became clear in high school. Her first collection was produced out of Brazil and is now produced out of Italy of course!

The collection is stylish and classic and has been donned by the likes of Sevyn Streeter and editorially featured in Composure Magazine, Head Magazine, and Paradise Magazine. Serving as an introduction to who she is, she designed only heels for well, the well heeled. From strappy sandals to tassel ladened booties Becki Coakley covers the shoe gamut.

With that said, it was only right that FTBUP sat down with this emerging designer - over google hangout - to get the scoop on how she got started and where she's headed. Check it out...

FTBUP: Who inspired you to become a shoe designer?

Becki Coakley: My mom was the ultimate dresser. We would go shopping in Charleston, South Carolina – my hometown – and she would come out of the store with 10 pairs of shoes. She had a great sense of taste and style. Shoes have always been the most important part of an outfit to me, forget the clothes! I start with my shoes and figure the rest of my outfit out from there. I admire classic, timeless brands like Gucci, that you can own and wear forever. Quality vs. quantity is my motto.

FTBUP: What is your design aesthetic?

BC: Timeless and classic with a twist. I am not into trends, but I want something that’s eye-catching and unique. I don’t want to look like every person walking down the street.

FTBUP: Out of your collection, what is your favorite style?

BC: Ooo that’s a hard one, it changes from time to time. I have three favorites.

The Kecia Sandal - its my favorite for running around. You can throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and still look chic.

The Angie – named after my mother and designed after the letter A. These are on my favorite simply because my mother was such an inspiration. She inspired not only the design of this shoe, but also the design of my logo.

The Charlene Bootie – great for day to night and can add a little flavor to any outfit.

FTBUP: Who are your style influencers?

BC: My mom of course and Jackie O. She was sophisticated and classy. Lena Horne was simply divine and her sophistication and classiness came with a bit of pizazz.

FTBUP: Where do you see your brand in the next 5 years?

BC: My plan is to have a few store fronts nationally, distribution in stores like Barney’s and Neiman Marcus and to begin to get more recognition internationally.

FTBUP: Why shoes?

BC: That’s me. It’s my passion and heart. It’s in me. It’s all I’ve ever known. It’s everything. It’s all I see. Shoes make or break it all for me.

FTBUP: Describe Becki Coakley in three words.

BC: Stylish. Chic. Different.

Becki's next collection will include flats - though she herself is not a flat lover - slip-ons, thongs and color. She's playing with the idea of texture and materials like silk and pleats. And lastly, this collection, like the first will be inspired by architecture, symmetry, the budding colors in Charleston and of course her dear mother.

Designer Spotlight: Tony Bianco

The Ariette Made To Order Boot

The Ariette Made To Order Boot

Hey lovas after a one year hiatus, Designer Spotlight is back in full effect. I have super big plans for this section from creation to execution, but in the mean time I decided that I want to continue to bring you the designers/brands I am crushing on.

With that said, first up to clack - as in clackin' heels - is Tony Bianco. Tony Bianco is an Australian footwear brand that specializes in chic. From made to order thigh-high lace up boots {as seen on Emily B} to classically shaped block heeled sandals, there's much to choose from. I am particularly fond of the minimalist approach to the designs. Clean angles, sharp lines an neutral colors allow for Tony Bianco to become an instant closet staple.

Not to mention, the price point is well, allllaadat! The brand also dabbles in handbags, eyewear, and jewelry. If you want to add some classic pizazz to your collection, I suggest you hop on over to the site and check 'em out - it'll be the quickest trip to Australia, like E-V-E-R!

Designer Spotlight: Ruthie Davis

This week's Designer Spotlight goes to the indelible, vivacious and enthusiastic Ruthie Davis - have you seen her instagram?! One of my BFF's put me on to this woman and her delicious shoe collection about two years ago and I've been in love with them and HER ever since.

If you scroll a few pages back, you'll see my post of the hottest sales of the season where I featured the Ruthie Davis brand and touted her for creating 'platform perfection'. Ms. Davis began creating shoes in 2006 after a notable career in the fashion and footwear business. Her knack for design and her business acumen allowed her to quickly rise to the top of the shoeuniverse. In most recent shoenews, she became a member of the CFDA and her infamous "Odyssey" heels created for Queen Bey will be featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - not bad huh!

I won't go into too much detail because we keep things light and fun at From The Bottom Up, but some of these major accomplish could not go without mention. Without further-ado, see my favs from her collection...

The Stefani. Knee high caged sandal zipups that I'd rock in 30 degree weather with a pair of denim shorts and an overcoat. They are worth the freeze!

The Ashlee. An all time favorite I have yet to add to my shoe collection. Perfect pop of coral to jazz up an outfit in summer or fall.

Kelly. A classic pump with a kick. The two-tone patent leather shoe goes with any outfit and look comfy as all get out. Love the wedge like detail of the heel too. Killer!

The Levan. Not your average mary jane. This 5.5 inch stunner is less school girl and more grown woman. The colored heel is fun and plays perfectly into the navy blue. Can't wait to own a pair.

Joanne. I first noticed these on Ruthie Davis' Instagram and instantly fell in love! Just looking at them make me want to bring out my inner stripper! The lucite heel is super playful and the cuff like ankle strap adds uniqueness. Needless to say, I want...no I NEED these now!

All shoes are avail at www.ruthiedavis.com.

Happy Shoepping lovas.

p.s. the Ashlee, Kelly and Levan are all currently on sale ;0)!!

p.p.s i can't wait to get into her shoe studio to interview her for Shoe Stories!
